About Jari

Uniquely Qualified to Lead Oklahoma

On January 15th 2009, Lt Governor Jari Askins became the first announced candidate for governor in 2010.

Jari has always been a trailblazer.

She was the first Democratic woman elected Lt. Governor, the first woman to become Democratic Leader of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the first woman to be elected State Representative from Southwest Oklahoma and the first woman to chair The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board.

With our help, Jari Askins will become the first woman elected Governor of Oklahoma. But, to Jari, her campaign for governor is not about adding another first to her list of accomplishments. It’s about bringing all Oklahomans together to build for the future.

Jari Askins’ roots run deep in Oklahoma. She was born and raised in Duncan where she learned the Oklahoma Values of family, faith, honesty, hard work and education.

Experience

Jari’s experience is unmatched, her integrity and dedication unquestioned. In every office she has held, Jari has earned the respect and affection of Oklahomans in both parties. She has served Oklahoma in all three branches of government. Before Jari was elected Lt. Governor and a leader in the legislature, she served as a Special District Judge and as Deputy General Counsel in the Governor’s Office. Just three weeks after her appointment to The Pardon and Parole Board, her fellow members elected her chairman.

Leadership

Statehouse Most of all, Jari is a leader Oklahomans can count on. She often goes against the grain without regard to political parties. Jari has been a determined advocate for children and the elderly, for ending government waste and for helping education, health care, law enforcement and business. Setting partisan politics aside, she negotiated legislation that made workers compensation more reasonable while protecting the rights of injured workers.

Jari knows Oklahoma wins when both parties work together. That philosophy has guided her throughout her career in public service and will guide her as governor.

Service

As testimony to her thoughtful and fair leadership, Jari has been honored with outstanding service awards from dozens of organizations including: The National Association of Social Workers, Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association, Oklahoma Main Street Program, Leadership Oklahoma, Girl Scouts Sooner Council, Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women, Oklahoma Farmers Union, Oklahoma Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Oklahoma Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Oklahoma Chapter of the American Heart Association, Oklahoma Association of County Commissioners, Oklahoma County Clerks Association, Oklahoma Public Employees Association and the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association.

Jari was named a Henry Toll Fellow as one of 40 recipients nationwide recognized as emerging state government leaders. She is a recipient of the Oklahoma Wildlife Federation’s President’s Award and a Friend of Medicine Award from the Oklahoma State Medical Association. Jari has been inducted into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame and the Duncan Public Schools Foundation Hall of Fame.

Jari earned journalism and law degrees from the University of Oklahoma. She’s an active member of The First Christian Church of Duncan where she sings in the choir.

Hello Honorable mam. I am so glad that I stumbled upon your web site.
I am a Vietnam ERA veteran, and am disabled 100%. I spend a lot of time hurting phisically from old wounds, but I am not complaining. Life is good… My wife is a Federal employee and serves with integrity and pride. I watched her struggle with the idea that men on her previous job were less qualified and did less of the same work for more pay. Yet she remained loyal til I encouraged her to move on.
She did. That is why your site caught my attention. Stand Jeri and don’t hold back I know that I am not an Oklahomain but I am your countryman, So stand Jeri stand. I will be contributing to your campaign. Just have to discuss it with my wife when she gets in from work. Special thoughts to the families who lost loved one to the terrorist attack on Oklahoma City. Our prayers are with them. Jeri thanks for serving our country.

Jari will speak for children and families and keep their interests above politics. She will be an advocate in government for Oklahoma families at a time when services are being slashed weekly by the current legislature. Let’s get her elected in November!

As an advocate for individuals with disabilities I believe that Jari is the best representative for our issues within our state. She hears from ears to her heart and has proven that time and time again. Individuals with disabilites vote too, and I ask that we support her at the polls in July. Plan ahead for a ride.

Is there any way to actually find out where this candidate stands on the issues?

  • sarahkatheryn said:

Probably the best place for our issue stances is on the YouTube page where we have all of the video from the debates. We’re going to upload last week’s debate so that should be there soon. Another good way is by using the search feature at the upper right of the website to search for the issue that matters most to you. Our news section has a lot of news articles, op-eds, and supporters blogs that talks about the issues that Jari has worked on.

I have known Jari since she was a freshman in college. She was a leader even then. I am proud to call her my sister; I am proud to call her my friend. I trust her with the future of the State of Oklahoma and would be more than proud to call her my Governor!

I too am on disability, but my disability was caused by others. The first 25 years of my life, were filled with every kind of abuse posssible. Nearly 20 years ago, my life was changed drastically, by an orginization that does not get nearly enough funding or awareness. This place is called Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS)/CALL RAPE, in Tulsa. I have been to the state capitol with them the past three years, for lobby day, during Sexual Assault Awareness month. I beleive Jari has spoken, each of these times. I would like to see more funding become available, not only to help organizations such as this one, all across the state. But to keep repeated offenders behind bars, for much longer than they are currently being incarcerated. Perhaps even for life, as these people do not change and are a danger to every Oklahoman. I believe Jari is the just the person to get this accomplished. She has my vote.

If i can be of some assistance, in some way, please contact me.

Drew may be my cousin but, Jari, you’re my pick for Governor!

  • Joe Mvicker said:

Congrats Jari, we are pulling for you all the way!

  • Jennifer Dubois said:

Congratulations on your primary victory! I will be voting for you in the general election as I believe you will do the best job for the children of Oklahoma. As a mom my first priority is my children, but as a responsible citizen I also place a priority on all mothers’ children. They are our future and it is our duty to make sure that our children have bright futures themselves. As a dedicated Democrat I also believe that our party has the strongest commitment to Oklahoma’s children, all of Oklahoma’s children.

I think Oklahomans of all party affiliations need to give Jari a look. She’s the better choice.

Im a freshmen in college and have met Ms,Askins several times at the capitol and other events. She has always been respectful and gracious. I would love to see Oklahoma with a strong female leader.
The majority of my family works in education and that is also my intended major. Ms. Askins is the only choice for governor if education is important to you.
    Good Luck!!

I DO BELIEVE THAT IT IS HIGH TIME OKLAHOMA HAVE A GOVERNOR THAT IS MORE THAN A POLITICIAN. WE NEED SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN THIS STATES’ CITIZENS AND I BELIEVE THAT MS. ASKINS IS SUCH A PERSON. I FEEL THAT SHE IS NOT ONE TO GO BACK ON HER PRINCIPLES AND WILL DO ALL THAT SHE CAN TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT. TO THAT END, I WILL DO ALL I CAN TO PROMOTE HER TO BE ELECTED.
