The first debate will be sponsored and hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma on October 18, 2010. The Tulsa Metro Chamber will sponsor the second debate on October 28, 2010 on the campus of Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. Both debates will begin at 7:00 p.m. and last for one hour. The debates will be open to every media outlet in the state, and they will be the only two debates between the candidates for governor.

“I’m running to be your governor because I believe in the families of Oklahoma. I believe in the working families, the retired families, I believe in the multi-generational families that are helping raise children because young parents have had problems,” she said. “I’m running because I believe that every one of those families and every one of those kids and every one of those seniors deserve the right to feel like the state of Oklahoma believes in them, cares about them and is going to help all of those who cannot help themselves.”

Askins spoke Tuesday in Norman during the annual Indian Country Business Summit. She says tribal interests and businesses have a combined economic impact of $15 billion in Oklahoma and that she “shudders to think what would happen” if there was not a strong tribal business presence in Oklahoma.

Positive Tomorrows provides students and families with the stability, resources, and emotional support to succeed. New students are fitted with age-appropriate clothing, and provided with hot meals at school each day. More than 400 donated school supplies were delivered to Positive Tomorrows on Friday afternoon from the Lt. Governor’s Office. “Capitol staff was extremely generous, and everyone was energized to help Positive Tomorrows begin their new school year,” Askins said.

In the wake of 9/11, then Representative Askins supported the creation of the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security. This vital agency has worked to provide much needed training and resources to communities all over the state as they prepare for any disaster, from tornados to terrorism, that we as Oklahomans may face.

“My parents were very civic-minded and they always voted,” Askins said. “I remember them talking about voting being a private function. They didn’t discuss with us how they voted until we were all out of college.”
